The Special Issue “Maps in/as Media – On the Mediated Production of Geographical Knowledge” explores maps as key elements of contemporary media ecologies. Moving beyond their role as tools of representation, the issue examines how cartographic visualizations actively shape spatial knowledge, imaginaries and experiences across journalism, digital platforms, social media and fictional worlds. We invite contributions that critically engage with maps as epistemic tools, visual arguments and affective media within broader debates in media studies, critical cartography, GIScience, human geography and spatial theory.
Abstract submission deadline: 14 June 2026
